What is aluminium?

Over the years, garden has been made from many different materials. Natural rattan has moved to a synthetic plastic resin known as PU rattan as it is cheaper and hardwearing. Metal garden furniture has also seen a shift from heavy solid pieces of cast iron, to a more resistant steel, to the lighter aluminium. Cast iron furniture can still be seen in some public areas, but the majority of metal garden furniture is aluminium. The reason there has been a shift to aluminium outdoor furniture is the third most abundant naturally occurring material. Only silicon and oxygen are more abundant on Earth. Aluminium also has some incredible properties for manufacturing aluminium garden table and chairs.

Can aluminium rust?

Aluminium has a rather special quality to make itself more resistant to corrosion. As the aluminium mixes with the oxygen in the air, it forms a kind of protective film made from aluminium oxide. This layer then stops other elements from interacting with the aluminium and can therefore be left outside for long periods of time. Aluminium patio furniture essentially removes the need to store the furniture over the colder months.

Is aluminium heavy?

Due to aluminium's density, it is one of the lightest metals. Even though aluminium is light, it is also very strong. It can take the brunt of everyday use, safely hold a decent amount of weight, and means it is easily transported. One of the most compelling aspects of aluminium garden furniture, is how effortlessly it can be moved around and if needed, stowed away.

Any design benefits?

A big concern with manufacturing can be how malleable a metal is. This is how easy a material can be used, shaped, and manipulated to a desired design. Due to this, aluminium garden tables and chairs can come in a wide variety of styles and colours, and can be coupled with any cushion combination.

What are the most popular styles of aluminium patio furniture?

Retro Garden Furniture

Retro is technically an ever changing and growing art style. However, in its current form, it is usually referencing the 1950s to the 1970s. Retro furniture is usually spray painted or coated in lighter, pastel colours. The design focuses around geometry and being able to add and remove pieces modularly. Usually, retro is reserved for second hand furniture purchases.

Modern Garden Furniture

The modern movement is now around one hundred years old but is still a popular design option. Modern aluminium garden furniture changes all the time but has some fundamental characteristics. It is designed to provocative and different; it was used more as a statement and actually ahead of its time. They designed a lot of modern furniture on the human body, by making it more curvaceous, which now is quite normal, but sparked outrage at the time. Modern nowadays is using contrasting colours and harder edges, which aluminium achieves brilliantly.

Contemporary Garden Furniture

A lot of contemporary furniture starts life as modern furniture. Contemporary is just the furniture that is most popular now. Contemporary garden furniture has transitioned from natural rattan wicker to a PU plastic variant, and iron has been replaced with aluminium.
